Una Ursprung

Una Ursprung (b. 1985, Taipei) is a contemporary artist whose work is grounded in the visual and conceptual language of forest and nature. Working across painting, photography, and collage, she approaches landscape as a field of perception rather than a site of representation. Her practice can be understood as a form of "sensory writing," tracing how emotion, memory, and inner states emerge at the intersection of body, time, and culture.

Motherhood in 2022 marked a significant turning point in her practice. The repetitive rhythms of early childcare fragmented her experience of time and space into discontinuous, drifting intervals. Within these ruptures, subtle and often overlooked moments began to take on an unexpected intensity and clarity. This heightened sensitivity to micro-variations and continuous flow has since informed her approach to atmosphere, rhythm, and layering.

Her paintings are rooted in figuration, yet unfold through processes of erasure and reconstruction, maintaining a suspended state between abstraction and representation. Forms and lines are repeatedly broken and reconfigured, transforming landscape into a visualization of perceptual processes rather than a depiction of nature. Within her work, the forest becomes a relational diagram—mapping the negotiation between human and environment, inner rhythms and external reality, repetition and revelation.

Ursprung understands art as a gentle yet persistent practice of memory: a way of capturing fleeting glimmers within the flow of everyday life and extending them into visual continuity.

She graduated from Taipei National University of the Arts and the École Européenne Supérieure d'Art de Bretagne in Quimper, France (DNSEP, with the congratulations of the jury).

She currently lives and works in Alsace, France.
